Style Counsel: Hair

We've all seen nightmare hair extensions and jobs so good you can't believe a starlet's hair was bobbed the night before. How does one prevent the former and achieve the latter?

OK
! got the top five tips from celebrity extension specialist Melissa Brown, who's dressed the tresses of Lindsay Lohan, Kirsten Dunst, Bette Midler and Christina Applegate.

1) Extensions will run you anywhere between $500-2,000 so make sure you go to your colorist and are happy there before you make the commitment — coloring extensions is a bad idea.

2) To avoid a Britney debacle, make sure the person cutting your extensions is a specialist; it is a completely different talent and people don't realize how important this is to the overall blended look.

3) They're chemically attached to your head anywhere between 10-12 weeks so to prevent damage to your new growth, always brush with a good brush like Mason Pearson and braid hair before bed.

4) Don't use hair from your local beauty supply, make sure your stylist gets the best possible, I prefer Great Lengths or So Cap.

5) Do your research. Word of mouth is the best way to go.
